Not to be confused with the Internet, Internet and Intranet both
provide users with extensive information specific to the organisation.
An Internet site is designed to mimic an Internet site but differs in
that the information contained within it, resides on an internal network.
Users navigate through the information using their existing and familiar
web browser. Almost all company documentation is suitable for publication
on the Intranet but typically this might include product information,
price lists, and procedures and may also include personnel policies and
organisational charts. An Intranet is of particular benefit where fast
retrieval of information assists with providing efficient and effective
service to customers.
An Internet extends some or all of this information to external
agencies such as customers, suppliers and mobile staff. Internet access
requires the user to have an Internet connection and since this, in
theory, would allow access to anyone in the world, high levels of security
are involved to ensure that only those with appropriate permission are
able to enter the site. |
